Huxley's quote was used to open the first episode of the final season of Grimm. Having read Brave New World several years ago, I remember how I read from a birds eye perspective - a place of privilege, secure in my naïveté that nothing like a failed society could ever happen to my home. When I think of quotes that describe me, individuals like Roald Dahl, Oscar Wilde, Eleanor Roosevelt and J.K. Rowling are names that come to mind. Quotes filled with hope and light and air, quotes to inspire and motivate. Winston Churchill - if you're going through hell, keep going. Frost - the best way out is always through.
For me, Huxley's quote represents a drastic shift in self-awareness regarding how I view my thought process. Instead of positivity and forward motion, Huxley's quote is heavy and suggests that there is no way out and nothing to save here. (Bear in mind I am unaware of the quote's original context). Huxley's thought also is an answer to my question of if there is a benevolent God, why do bad things happen in the world to good, kind people? I have done a lot of research on this and yet I don't believe I will ever be able to answer suitably, but Huxley poses a convincing, albeit highly distressing, answer.
With the current political climate, I simply have not been able to adequately express my feelings in words. However, when I read this, two things occurred simultaneously - I felt my heart sink and my mind finally found a means for expression, as if the pieces finally fit together with a 'click.' With so many highly concerning issues in the world - such as Syria and other refugee crises climate change and global warming, abuse of children, elderly, disabled, and animals, violence against women, poverty, hunger, people going without enough, sex trafficking, child brides, sexism (in education, the workplace, etc), war, pollution, persecution of people of different faiths, racism, xenophobia, inadequate access to healthcare (both physical and mental), and more, it is hard to remember that there are still good people in this world who care tremendously.
I need to remember about good people more, but it is hard when information about the awful things around the world overwhelms us.
